As soon as the weather cools down, those of us who wash our hands frequently can be affected by dry skin which can quickly become cracked and painful. Using alcohol-based hand rubs (ABHR)are kinder to your hands because they contain emollients and are less harsh than soap and water.
If you suffer from irritant contact dermatitis (characterised by dryness of the web spaces between your fingers) which may be caused by frequent exposure to water and soap, use of paper towels, glove powder or low humidity (such as during winter), using ABHR more frequently may help reduce the irritation. Use a non-perfumed, good quality moisturiser REGULARLY at work and at home.
If you continue to have dermatitis despite making these changes, have a look at the Occupational Dermatology Research and Education Centre for some great information including types of moisturisers. Go to https://www.occderm.asn.au/.
